05 October 2023
Extreme weather conditions are now phenomena that we face in almost every season. In recent winters the sudden, large drop in temperature and heavy snowfalls create serious problems on the road network, with good preparation and foresight continuing to be the most important resources of the modern driver.
PREPARATION: what to do if you need to move with your vehicle during bad weather.
- Make sure your vehicle is equipped with chains and use them if necessary.
- Find out about the condition of the road network you are going to follow and make sure you stay constantly informed about the course of the weather.
- Fill the car with fuel and check the basic systems of your car.
- Keep a low speed – leave a large distance from the vehicle in front so that you have time and space to react in an emergency.
- Do not brake suddenly as there is a risk of your vehicle swerving.
DURING: what to do if your vehicle stalls.
- Do not try to free your vehicle by pressing more on the accelerator, as there is a risk that the wheels will sink even deeper into the snow.
- Try to move the wheels left and right a few times to get the snow off them.
- Notify the police about the immobilization of your vehicle.
- Run the engine for 10 minutes per hour.
- Regularly check that the exhaust is clear of snow.
