Basic inspection of your boat, before the summer
05 October 2023
The sunny days of spring and the ever-increasing temperatures create the ideal climate for touring with… your boat! But before you enjoy your sailing trip, be sure to do a quick but necessary check to ensure that after such a long period of downtime, everything is working as it should be, or if not, take the necessary actions so that you and everyone occupants safe.
Three points to check:
The fuel
Most basic of all is checking for any leakage in the fuel system. Carefully check those points that are not easily visible as well as the soft pipes that are more "sensitive" to wear, so that you can identify any problems, in time, and proceed with their repair.
The fluids
Check that all fluid points - engine oil, antifreeze - are full or need topping up. Also check Check the pipes for any wear and whether they close properly. Cables over 10 years old that show wear and are stiff need to be replaced.
The battery
After a whole winter, is your boat battery still working? A classic, average boat battery typically lasts three to five years, provided it is properly maintained. So before you start the boat again, do a check: charge it overnight, leave the next day without starting the boat, then take the battery to a battery shop to have it checked.
