Car storage and immobilization, what we should pay attention to in the battery (and not only)!

05 October 2023

There are many cases where a driver is forced for various reasons to immobilize his vehicle and not use it for a long time. To avoid unpleasant surprises when we start the car again, there are a number of small but critical details that we must pay attention to:

  • It goes without saying that we will prefer a closed and covered area, both for less daily contact with the sun and for safety reasons. However, if this is not possible, a good car hood will pay off its cost with the protection it will offer.
  • It would be good to wash the car before stopping. If, for example, a drip or a persistent stain remains for a long time, it may well cause damage to the paint.
  • The most important point is the battery of our vehicle, which was not designed for long periods of immobility. We will have to remove the wires from the poles (some cars even have a special clip on one pole), especially if the immobility concerns a period of more than a week.
  • We have in mind that with the removal of the poles, the electromagnetic locks will not work, except on the driver's door, where there is a place for a key. It is likely that we will lose a number of settings in the car menus, as well as the radio memories.
  • For longer periods of immobility, we can either charge the -disconnected- battery with a charger, or put the car in front for, for example, 10 minutes, but first taking care of the proper ventilation of the space.
  • Finally, we don't forget to put sufficient pressure on the tires, as well as to do a check when the car goes into traffic.

Especially in case of long-term immobility (more than a year) it would be good to change the oils at the 1st opportunity, fill up "fresh" super unleaded gasoline in the tank and do a full check on all the pipes that circulate liquid (maybe they have dried out) , as in the air conditioning circuit.

Regarding the vehicle battery,

  • It is usually started with cables or a vehicle starter,
  • It is essential that it be checked together with the battery and the charging circuit by a specialist shop

By following these simple instructions we can be sure that we will be happy with our vehicle without any problems when we put it back on the road!
